Shankar Market
Shankar Market, one of central Delhi's oldest neighborhood marketplaces, was established a few years before independence. On the ground floor, there are 110 shops, and on the top floor, there are 53 stalls and 53 commercial units. It is one of the most easily accessible markets in Delhi, located right in the heart of the city.
Get off at the
Barakhamba Road Metro Station, then hop, skip, and jump to Shankar Market. In
contrast to the cold-shouldered posh Connaught Place, this market gives you a
cosy, pleasant atmosphere (CP).
This market
opens at 11 a.m. and closes at 8:30 p.m. Peak hours are from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m.
Although it is not a brand-savvy market, buying in this seven-corridor market
gives the impression of travelling from one Verandah to another.
The market
begins with Parashar Foods, which is well-known for their Rajma Chawal. It's a
fantastic, affordable restaurant that fills the hunger pangs of all the harried
office workers in the area during lunchtime. Regardless of the rush during
lunch hour, the lightning-fast service is something you must witness for
yourself!
The Lucknow Sewa
Emporium (Shop # 12) provides lovely Chikan kurtas with complex motifs and
embroidery. 'Eastern Opticals,' the only eyewear shop in this market, is
another noteworthy shop in the first corridor; it has a broad choice of frames
and lenses to fit every face and pocket.
Fabrics,
Fabrics and more fabrics
Moving on to the
next corridor, the important stores are 'Tarachand & Sons' and 'Matching
Centre,' both of which have a large range of clothing materials. True to its
name, 'Matching Centre' boasts a plethora of materials, tints, and hues of just
about any colour you're looking for!
This corridor
also has shops that sell a wide range of export fabrics, such as 'International
Prints' and 'Motilal & Sons', which sell fabrics in "thaans,"
which are suitable for both upholstery and dress materials - needless to say,
there is always a swarm of women at these shops, bargaining hard for the best
price.
